Exotic Tastes, Modern Flair

Our Story

Forge Coffee Roasters began long before there was a roastery.

I served in the Australian Army as a tank crewman, where some of my earliest memories of genuinely appreciating coffee came from a place you probably wouldn't expect — the turret floor of a tank.

Out field, coffee was part of our routine. I'd make it on the turret floor for the crew, and we'd share it over jaffles for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It wasn't specialty coffee, and there was certainly nothing glamorous about where we were drinking it, but those moments mattered. Coffee brought us together, gave us a chance to stop for a few minutes and became part of the camaraderie of being a crew.

Years later, that connection with coffee never really left me.

Pouring Coffee Beans

Forge Coffee Roasters is an independent, veteran-owned roastery based in Frankston, Victoria.

When I discovered specialty coffee and eventually roasting, I became fascinated by just how much goes into creating a great cup. The origin of the coffee, how it was processed, the roast profile, temperature, timing and development — small changes can completely alter the result.

That level of detail immediately appealed to me.

As a tank crewman, attention to detail wasn't optional. You learned to know your equipment, understand what was happening around you and take pride in doing things properly. Those same principles now influence the way I approach roasting.

At Forge, every batch gets my attention. I'm not interested in simply getting coffee through the roaster. I want to understand each coffee, develop a profile that suits it, watch how it responds throughout the roast and continually refine the result.

We roast in small batches and source coffees that we are genuinely proud to put our name on.

The equipment has changed considerably since those coffees on the turret floor, but what coffee represents to me hasn't.
